The expressed aim of Practical Hebrew is to get people speaking day-to-day conversational Hebrew as quickly as possible with a majority of native speakers. It’s an ambitious undertaking; however, in the opinion of this reviewer, the task seems likely to succeed for many of those who choose to sign up.
The course begins with a short introduction outlining the varied styles of the Hebrew language, including the noting of differences between formal and non-formal settings, elements of slang and dropped words. There is also a video describing a brief history of the Hebrew language itself.
The course is then divided into 10 parts. The recommended completion time for each part is 1 month, so that the entire course will take approximately 10 months to complete. Each part contains several modules dealing with practical topics such as greetings, asking for directions, buying goods at a grocery store, ordering food and beverages at restaurants or coffee shops, buying tickets to events such as the theatre, washing clothes at the drycleaners, getting a haircut, etc.
The emphasis is always on conversation, rather than immediately presenting grammatical structures and vocabulary, although neither of these two important aspects of a language are ignored. The text of each conversation is written in a three-column format; with English, Hebrew, and an easily understood transliteration appearing side-by-side in each row. All conversations are also accompanied by corresponding embedded audio files in mp3 format.
It is worth noting that Practical Hebrew is an on-line course, so reliable access to the Internet is important. However, the audio files are relatively small in size and there was no recognizable delay time after pressing the play buttons for any of them.
If you want to learn the fundamentals of conversational Hebrew that will actually help you communicate in the language, and are willing to pay US$27.00/month to accomplish it, then Practical Hebrew is for you. It will also provide a basic proficiency for future higher-level learning of the language.
We highly recommend the course to beginners who want to quickly learn to speak Hebrew.
